What's the Buzz about Fly Pupae?
Food insects for spiders - buy flies online

Small Live Food for Reptiles, Arthropods, Arachnids, Birds and Amphibians.

If you own small lizards, arachnids, turtles, or especially frogs, maybe your pet would be interested in Fly Pupae?

Fly Pupae (Mustica domestica) are unhatched flies, and they’re a feeder insect that is packed with nutrition and high in protein.

Like our other insects, Fly Pupae are grown right here on Australia’s largest insect farm, and shipped safe and sound to pet owners, zoos and sanctuaries throughout QLD, NSW, ACT, SA and VIC. Unlike, say, Crickets or Woodies, Fly Pupae are a little different in that they can be fed to your pets in pupae form, or they can be hatched into flies and served as a different feeder insect.

How do fly pupae work?

Have you ever tried to pack live flies into a box? We don’t recommend it. That’s why we ship our live flies in pupae form. Once your order arrives, put them in a fridge and keep them at around 6 degrees celsius and those pupae will stay dormant for about 1-2 weeks. During this time, you can feed them to your pet as a healthy live snack.

Alternatively, if you let them warm to room temperature, within 3-5 days, they’ll hatch into flies, and any frogs or other pets that love to hunt will enjoy the thrill of chasing down flies for their food - gaining valuable exercise with their nutrition.

Optimal hatching requires 30°C temperature, a minimum of 70% humidity & a 14 hour day length.

Do I have to hatch them into flies?

No, not at all. Pupae are a great snack when unhatched. You can can actually freeze the pupae for up to 6 months, just warming them up when serving. Freezing them means that even when warmed up again, they won’t be able to hatch any more.

Alternatively, we have deactivated fly pupae that you can also keep in the freezer for 6 months. But unlike live pupae, with deactivated pupae, you don’t have to worry about accidentally hatching hundreds of flies if you forget to keep them in the fridge.
