Scientific Name: Bombyx mori
Silkworms are the caterpillar stage of the domestic silk moth.
Silkworms are a valuable addition to the diet of many reptiles and amphibians, including frogs, toads, salamanders, turtles, lizards and snakes. Spiders, scorpions and other predator insects may also enjoy them.
Our silkworms are hand raised using only mulberry leaves which is their natural diet and produces a much healthier and more nutritious caterpillar. They are a very labour intensive live food insect to grow for sale but a very beneficial food source for many animals.
Silkworms are easy to digest and are relatively low in fat and high in protein. They have a very good calcium to phosphorus ratio and are a good source of essential vitamins and minerals. They are high in vitamins A and B complex. Most animals find them a tasty and desirable meal.
A big advantage of silkworms is that they are easy to catch.
They will need to be fed mulberry leaves 2 to 4 times per day, while keeping them, before feeding them to your animals. We sell mulberry leaves separately in a bag. They eat a lot so don't be surprised if they have eaten some of their leaves in transit. We do give them a good number of leaves when they are sent to you.
Silkworms as Pets: Silkworms also make fantastic pets for kids to teach them about life-cycles.
Some people call silkworms "hornworms" however the true hornworm that American sites recomend are not available in Australia.
An absolute favorite with all my Beardies. Well packed and all alive. Wish they were more readily available.
Very healthy, grew to 3 inches
Silkworms are my 7yo blue tongue’s all time favourite yearly snack. Never seen a lizard get so excited. They came all safe and sound, I ensured they have a clean container and fresh leaves everyday until they got huge and ready to become food for my big boy, he already ate them all. I did give one each to my 2 other blueys, they’re not super big into silkworms but they enjoyed the crickets and giant mealworms which I also ordered here.
